Picking Up Stitches for a Button Band. Part 4

So, there are two sets of stitches running parallel to one another: one set on the RS needle, and one on the WS needle with working yarn at the top on RS. We will work 2 rounds of st st on these stitches. Luсkily, my 3.5 mm needle is about 100 cm long and the edge is rather short, so it's possible to use magic loop.

With 3.5 mm circular needle knit all WS sts, working from top to bottom:

With the same needle knit all RS sts, working from bottom to top (first round completed):

Repeat this round one more time:

Next Row (you will need one more needle):
• Sl 1 wyif (RS needle stitch), k1 (WS needle stitch) - tubular selvedge;
• {purl one stitch from the RS needle together with one stitch from the WS needle, covering and containing the selvedge stitches} repeat to the last three sts (two on the front needle and one on the back needle);
• p1 (RS needle stitch);
• sl 1 wyif (RS needle stitch), k1 (WS needle stitch) - tubular selvedge.

You will have a total of 30 sts on your needle after completion of this row (the two layers are joined):

The same, RS view:

Continue your work in Flat 1 x 1 Ribbing with tubular selvedges:

Notes:

1. You can use any other selvedges, if you don't like tubular ones. In this case, you need to change accordingly knitting of the edge stitches when joining layers.
2. You can use other non-curling stitch patterns for your button bands. Calculate your ratio between the stitches and rows using the vertical gauge of your front details and the horisontal gauge of your bands' pattern.
3. You can place all the sts both from RS and WS on one needle alternating them after 2 rounds of st st. Then you will not need the third needle for joining of the layers.
4. As I mentioned before, it is possible to do without a second needle when picking up stitches, placing both stitches and YOs (future WS stitches) on one 2-2.5 mm needle. Then you will have to work 4 rows of double knitting instead of 2 rounds of st st and change to 3.5 mm needle for joining of the layers.
5. Needle sizes are given here for this particular yarn (Aade Lõng Solid 8/2) and taking into account my (tight) manner of knitting:
4 mm for st st,
3.5 mm for 1*1 ribbing,
2-2.5 mm for double knitting.
You will need other needle sizes for a different yarn or for a different manner of knitting.

This cardigan's bands a worked as described above: You can find more cardigan's photos here.
